The Book of Abraham has been a very controversial book of restoration Scriptures. One of the (non-doctrinal) reasons for this, has been the apparent disconnect between the Joseph Smith Papyri and the text of the Book of Abraham. In fact, many solutions have been proposed for this apparent problem. Of special interest, from a Jewish roots perspective, is the solution proposed by Joe Sampson, in his 1993 book Written by the Finger of God; Decoding Ancient Languages, a Testimony of Joseph Smith’s Translation, which proposed that the Book of Abraham was embedded in the Egyptian Papyri as a hidden Hebrew text, using Kabbalistic methods such as notarikon, gematria and temurah.
